Oreochromis karongae "Cape Maclear"

Oreochromis karongae can be found in entire Lake Malawi. Mainly it's living in shallow water in areas with vegetation. This example has been photographed in the neighbourhood of Cape Maclear.
These cichlids are, together with the other tilapia species, very important for the local consumption of fish around Lake Malawi.

In the lake the males of these species can grow to 29 cm, females stay smaller.

Oreochromis karongae is a very peaceful cichlid, which you can best keep with multiple females and other big species in a large tank with a lot of swimming space.

In the lake they are mainly feeding themselves with everything they can find on the rocks but sometimes also with everything they can find in the upper layer of the mud and with phytoplankton. In the aquarium they are comfortable with any food. They take everything they get offered, like spirulina pellets, mysis, artemia, cyclops and shrimp-peas mix.
